The baseline target failed under the impact while the target utilizing metallic glass as a replacement for the fabric layers in the baseline passed the test. The paper postulates on the prospects of future implementation of metallic glasses as spacecraft debris shields.

Flexural and Impact Properties of Stainless Steel based Glass Fibre Reinforced Fibre Metal Laminate under Hygrothermal Conditioning
Fibre metal laminates (FMLs) have appeared as the most suitable materials for shipbuilding, aeronautical and aerospace applications due to their superior mechanical properties over traditional materials. In this paper, degradation in flexural and impact properties of glass fibre/epoxy composite (GF/E composite) and stainless steel glass fibre/epoxy fibre metal laminate (SS FML) due to hygrother...
متن کاملHypervelocity Impact on Rock
Concerted research efforts are being made to find new means of rock disintegration for more rapid, efficient excavation. Water jets, metallic jets and hypervelocity projectiles have been found to cut or break rock with varying degrees of efficiency depending upon several parameters, which are being defined by research in Russia, Britain and the United States. Optimum performance of high velocit...
متن کاملThe dynamic compressive behavior of beryllium bearing bulk metallic glasses
In 1993, a new beryllium bearing bulk metallic glass with the nominal composition of Zr41.25Ti13.75Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 was discovered at Caltech. This metallic glass can be cast as cylindrical rods as large as 16 mm in diameter, which permitted specimens to be fabricated with geometries suitable for dynamic testing. For the first time, the dynamic compressive yield behavior of a metallic glass was...
متن کاملPressure effects on Ca60Al40 metallic glass superconductors
Theoretical computation of the pressure dependence superconducting state parameters of binary Ca60Al40 is reported using model potential formalism. Explicit expressions have been derived for the volume dependence of the electron–phonon coupling strength λ and the Coulomb pseudopotential μ* considering the variation of Fermi momentum KF and Debye temperature ӨD with volume. Well known Ashcroft’s...
متن کاملDoes Laser Ablation Vapor Simulate Impact Vapor?
Introduction: Many laser experiments have been done to simulate hypervelocity impact vaporization [e.g., 15]. Laser simulation has a number of advantages. It can create high-temperature plumes with high repeatability and a high repetition cycle at a relatively low cost. Furthermore, because laser light can penetrate through a glass window (if chosen properly), the target material and vaporizati...
